Western Pennsylvania Professional Football Circuit

Introduction

The Western Pennsylvania Professional Football Circuit (WPPFC) was a Top-Player League and the first ever professional football league that operated in the north-eastern United States during the late 19th century. The league that is the subject of this page was formed in 1890 (136 years ago).

The  WPPFC was a loose association of American football clubs that operated from 1890 to approximately 1940. The league was originally amateur (known as the Western Pennsylvania Football Circuit) with professionalism being introduced to the circuit in 1892. The WPPFC would not be able to hold on to its top players as other circuits became more attractive as they paid better. Though the WPPFC existed in some form for 48 years, its importance was its earliest years, when it was the top of the professional Football world.

By the mid-1890s allegations of professionalism became known. The Allegheny Athletic Association was found guilty by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) of paying cash to players and was permanently barred from any kind of competition with other AAU members. A year later, the Latrobe Athletic Association, went entirely professional. As the AAU would disqualify amateur member teams from playing professional teams, the WPPFC teams instead played each other and the winner of the circuit would lay claim to a national, but professional, Football championship from 1890 to 1903. The league would play openly professional games as of 1892. Because the WPPFC was a small regional professional league, most Football fans would recognize the best College Football team as the national Football champion (which had been competing since 1869).

By 1904, the exodus of pro Football talent to the Ohio Independent Championship, diminished the WPPFC’s level of play and the national professional champions, were then claimed by the teams from Ohio. None of the teams from the WPPFC would go on to contribute to the establishment of other professional Football leagues. Instead it would leave a legacy as a league that helped establish professional play in Football and develop the earliest professional talent.
