International League in 1887

Introduction

The International League was a minor league baseball league that operated in the eastern United States during the late 19th century. It was formed when the New York State League joined with Canadian teams based in Ontario. The league played season 3 in 1887, 139 years ago.

The International League is one of the top minor league teams in all of Baseball. Its beginning started in 1885 as the New York State League. Then that league and the Ontario League merged in 1886 to form the International League. In 1887 the league absorbed teams from the Eastern League to create a larger league.

The season was a messy affair with teams disbanding and moving during season play.

  • Oswego disbanded May 31. Scranton joined the league with the provision that they start with a clean slate.
  • Utica transferred to Wilkes-Barre July 15.
