Introduction
The Western League was a minor league baseball league that operated in the central United States during the late 19th century. The league that is the subject of this page was formed in 1885 (141 years ago). It is indirectly related to the Western League that was reformed in 1893.
The Western League was one of three minor leagues that was formed in 1885. For the first two seasons it operated as an independent minor league. It then joined into a formal contract “National Agreement” with the National League and American Association to honor player suspensions and reserve clauses for a few of its seasons.
The legacy of the Western League was being one the first independent leagues in Baseball. Also a number of its teams go on to relaunch the Western League in 1894. These teams were the Indianapolis Hoosiers, Kansas City Blues, Milwaukee Brewers, Minneapolis Millers would join the reformed Western League of 1894, and that league would eventually become the American League.
The Western League operated as the Western League (WL) from 1885 to 1887; renamed itself the Western Association (WA) from 1888 to 1891; then was reverted its name back to the Western League (WL) in 1892, its final season. The league was plagued with a multitude of teams disbanding in-season and being unable to complete its season in 1885 and 1892.
