A Single-A affiliate league is often a second or third promotion for a minor league player, although a few high first-round draftees, particularly those with college experience, begin at this level. These leagues play a complete season like Triple-A and Double-A, from April through to early September.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is the premier outdoor soccer league which began play 1993. MLS experienced financial and operational struggles in its first few years: The league lost millions of dollars, teams played in mostly empty American football stadiums, and two teams folded in 2002. Since then, MLS has expanded to 22 teams, owners built soccer-specific stadiums, and has secured national TV contracts, and the league is now profitable.

The average salary for MLS players is $316,777, lower than the average salaries in England’s second-tier Football League Championship ($420,000 in 2015), Holland’s Eredivisie ($445,000), or Mexico’s Liga MX ($418,000 in 2015). The league’s minimum player salary increased in 2017 to $65,000 for most players, and roster players #25–28 saw their minimum salary increased to $53,000. MLS salaries are limited by a salary cap, which MLS has had in place since the league’s inception in 1996. The purpose of the salary cap is to prevent the team’s owners from unsustainable spending on player salaries and to prevent a competitive imbalance among teams.

Triple-A (or Class AAA) is the highest level of play in Minor League Baseball in the United States and Mexico. Before 2008, Triple-A leagues also fielded teams in Canada. A total of 30 teams play in the Triple-A International League (IL) and Pacific Coast League (PCL), with 14 teams in the IL and 16 in the PCL. The MLB-independent Mexican League fields 16 teams.

Interleague play between the International League and Pacific Coast League occurs twice each season. In September each league’s regular season champions play each other in the Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game to determine an overall champion of Triple-A baseball.

The Golden Baseball League was ambitious in its recruiting of college, ex-major and ex-minor league players. Its player development was noted for having over 100 players being sold to MLB organizations during its years of operation, with seven players already making it to a major league uniform. It was a well funded league with corporate sponsorship and backers but its decision to join an ambitious national footprint led to its folding.
